Coverage

Who’s eligible?

You’re eligible to elect this coverage if you work at least 12 hours per week.

Colleagues age 16 to 80 can enroll, and so can spouses/partners age 16 to 65. Children must be under age 26 to be enrolled in the optional child life rider.

To enroll, the colleague must be actively at work on the effective date of the policy. This means the colleague is not on FMLA, extended sick or disability leave; this does not include a sick day, vacation day or holiday. Additionally, to enroll a spouse/partner and child(ren), they cannot be disabled.

How coverage works

You elect life insurance coverage — and, if you later qualify for living benefits, receive an advance of a portion of your life insurance benefit to help cover the cost of care.

Have Questions?

Call Winston Benefits at 1-844-459-8616 to speak with a licensed benefit counselor trained on your specific Universal Life with Living Benefits policy.
Representatives are available Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. ET.

Coverage options

  • For yourself — Elect coverage of $25,000, $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000 (coverage cannot exceed 5x base salary).
  • For your spouse/partner — If you enroll in coverage for yourself, elect coverage of $25,000 or $50,000.
  • For your children — If you enroll in coverage for yourself, elect a $20,000 optional term life insurance rider (no caregiving benefit applies).

The amounts listed here are available as guaranteed issue, meaning you don’t have to provide evidence of good health through medical or blood tests, or answer any health questions before enrolling.

More about the accelerated death benefit (living benefit)

If you’re diagnosed with a debilitating condition, the living benefit feature allows you to accelerate your death benefit to help cover unexpected costs — helping to reduce the physical, emotional and financial burden of your care. The insured individual must be unable to perform two or more of the six activities of daily living for at least 90 days without substantial assistance or be severely cognitively impaired and need substantial supervision by another person.

Key features:

  • No restrictions on how you use the money — whether it’s paying household bills, helping to cover the cost of an assisted living facility, or reimbursing family members for taking care of you (your caregiver doesn’t have to be licensed for you to receive the benefit).
  • Access 4% of the policy value each month for up to 50 months.
  • Receive up to twice the policy’s face amount, plus 25% as a paid-up policy.

Here are a few examples. Note that spouses/partners are eligible for the $25,000 or $50,000 benefit levels.

Life insurance benefit Monthly living benefit
(4% of the life insurance amount)
Maximum living benefit
(2 times life insurance amount)
$25,000 $1,000 $50,000
$50,000 $2,000 $100,000
$75,000 $3,000 $150,000
$100,000 $4,000 $200,000

Other benefits

The Universal Life Insurance with Living Benefits coverage includes two other policy riders (in addition to the living benefits rider noted above), which include additional benefits designed to meet specific needs.

  • Terminal Condition Rider: Receive an advancement of up to 75% of the death benefit — but not more than $100,000 — if your doctor certifies you as terminally ill with less than 12 months to live.
  • Extension of Living Benefits Rider: This rider extends the payout of benefits month-by-month (for up to an additional 25 months) while you are receiving qualified services.

Click here to read more about all the policy riders.

You can enroll during your initial benefits-eligible enrollment period or during annual enrollment.

Note: Loans, withdrawals, and death benefit accelerations will reduce the policy value and the death benefit and may increase lapse risk. Policy loans are tax-free provided the policy remains in force. If the policy is surrendered or lapses, the amount of the policy loan will be considered a distribution from the policy and will be taxable to the extent that such loan plus other distributions at that time exceed the policy basis.
